About

I am a freelance comic illustrator, living in Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa.

I love collecting and reading comics as everything is visual for me. Drawing has been a way of communicating for me since I was 4.2 inches high and I have used it to explore my own view of the world. I obtained a two-year advertising diploma which covered art direction, story boarding and advertising concept. I found that my strongest areas were story boarding and illustration. I’ve been doing it ever since. I have worked for NGO’s, and for 9 years at Strika Entertainment where I was one of the head illustrators on the Supastrika comic. I have also always freelanced on the side, and am now mainly back in this mode.

My main inspiration and interest comes from people …. faces are my thing. I work mainly in pencil, ink pen, and digital illustration – both old and new school! One special project I have followed over the years has been doodling faces on the train – as an exercise it helped me to realise what I could do as an illustrator. I tried out different mediums … going from pencil to brush pen, then colour ball point, and fine-liner, creating thousands of very wiry portraits and filling up several note books. As an extension of my illustration, I also paint in acrylic on canvas.

After going to the Comic Convention in Sandiago in 2006 I was inspired to get involved in comic plush toys. The idea was exciting and playful and this led to designing Woo-men Plush Toys together with my wife Elaine.

I am also a professional musician, with percussion as my first love. My main instruments are the Hung, Cajon, Guitar, Keys and Voice. I work solo with a loop station on projects of my own. I have been with Cardigan Buzz for 5 years – and in fact have been playing in bands since I left high school. At one stage I was busking with several bands at the same time as well as street busking.

My current favourite things to do are: play ping-pong, float in the pool on my back for as long as I can, and eat mielies.
